Chapter Twenty-One

Within minutes the rain started to fall. The sun was covered by the gray storm clouds. Everything around us was dark except for the flashes from the lightning.

Both boats were moving roughly with the increasing vigorous waves. We’d bob up and then right back down, over and over, and it only seemed to be getting worse.

“Check under the seats for life preservers,” Jude said, his eyes focused ahead of us. “There must be something we can use.”

Nate tried to raise up our seat, but it didn’t budge. He carefully reached over to lift the other seat. Nate smiled when it opened. He reached inside and pulled out a single life preserver and a winded up piece of rope.

Nate handed me the life preserver, but I shook my head. We all had an equal shot at the one life-saving device on the boat.

“Jude should have it, he’s steering,” I said crossing my arms.

“Just put it on,” Jude ordered shaking his head. “Tie the rope to the railings then around our waists.”

Nate nodded and followed his instructions. He tied one end to the railing and then around his waist, mine and then Jude’s before tying the other end to the opposite railing.

It didn’t seem very secure, but it was better than nothing. There was always a chance it would stop us from being thrown from the boat.

“What if the boat tips? We’ll drown because we’re tied to it,” I said swallowing hard.

Jude placed his hand on his hip, and I knew he was checking to make sure his knife was still in place. “If we flip, I’ll cut the rope, and we should all be able to get free.”

“Free into the raging water,” I said. “Not sure that’s better.”

Jude nodded.

“Don’t trust the rope to keep you in the boat. Hold on to the railing at all times,” Nate said linking his arm through mine as the boat tipped upward and then sharply down a tall wave. “That goes for you too, Jude.”

“I’ll do my best,” Jude said, his knuckles white on the tiller.

I glanced across the water and spotted Dane’s boat. It was getting harder to see it with the pouring rain, mist, and waves.

They too had found a life vest. Toby was helping Sadie put it on when they hit a wave, and they all dropped to the bottom of the boat.

I blinked rapidly to keep the water out of my eyes. When they all sat back down, I let out a quick breath.

I wrapped my hand around the railing, but it was hard to hold on. The wetness caused my hand to slip and slide up and down the bar. Any sharp or abrupt movement and I was sure I’d lose my grip.

The rain started to come down in thick, massive sheets. It pelted my face so hard my skin felt numb and prickly. I tried to turn away, but it didn’t matter which direction I turned, the rain found me.

Jude was having a hard time steering. He was
